Thankful

11.25.11

Just popping in to say a quick hello. Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Our furniture is in storage so we had our Thanksgiving dinner on the floor. In our pajamas. Low-key for sure, but delicious. We finally nailed our cheesecake recipe! (It only took 5 failed attempts. NY style cheesecake is hard to get right!)

I have so much to be thankful for. A loving husband. My precious boys. The blessing of the Gospel in our lives. And cheesecake. I’m thankful for that, too. We are so richly blessed. There is so much beauty in this world. Brad took this with his iphone during our trip. Do you see the mama dear and her baby? So sweet.

Roof Deck? Maybe…

08.04.11

roof deck on modern home

We’ve been tweaking the house plans the last couple of weeks – adding, simplifying, correcting the what-the-heck-were-we-thinking parts of the floor plan. We only had two weeks to draw up the plans initially (almost two years ago!) for the rehab we had planned, but since we’re now building from scratch and can take our sweet time, we’re finding there are quite a few modifications we’d like to have done.

We’re currently debating whether or not to add a roof deck. It could be awesome town up there, but there’s a catch: we have no idea if we have an ocean view or not. Kinda important otherwise what the heck is the point in a roof deck? (Other than nude sunbathing of course… which we don’t plan to do… *ahem*)

We aren’t that far back from the beach and our house should be tall enough, but our neighbors house is slightly taller than ours because they have a traditional high pitch roof. See?

We aren’t the only ones who had this kooky idea that we might have a view. When we brought our contractor to the lot one of the first things he said was that we MUST plan for a roof deck. We were so excited that he, too, thought we might have a view that we responded by jumping up and down and clapping.

Okay, maybe there wasn’t any jumping. Or clapping. We totally played it cool. On the outside at least…

There is a chance that if we place the roof deck in the front our our house that we might be able have an unobstructed ocean view. Like this:

Okay, stop judging my lame, disproportionate, and incorrect drawing. Yes, there’s a tree there that I didn’t draw and yes, umbrellas aren’t the size of houses, but you get the idea. Anyway, the only way to really know for sure whether or not we have an ocean view is to rent a cherry picker and raise it to the level of our future roof.

But that will take time and effort.

And money.

And we’re lazy.

And cheap.

So… we’ve put it on the back burner. We plan to wait until the house is framed to see what we got, then we’ll go from there. Fingers crossed!

BTW, if we do end up adding a roof deck we don’t plan to do anything too fancy. (Fancy = $$$) We’ll just do something simple like the top image. To which Brad laughs and says the top image is fancy. Whatevs dude. I’m saying we slap some decking and a little railing up there and call it good.

Feeling like a foodie

08.02.11

Had to take a picture of dinner with my iphone before I could eat it. In an effort to be more adventurous in the kitchen, Brad and I have started trying out a few new recipes each week. These honey and apricot glazed pork chops have to be one of my favorites thus far. Holy yum-o-licious!

Paring Progress

06.27.11

A couple of weeks ago I mentioned how ridiculous and excessive I felt having so many clothes when I only wear about 10% of my wardrobe. Well, folks, I’ve outdone myself… in the bathroom. You wouldn’t believe how many personal care and cosmetic items I own! I packed three 18 gallon bins!! What?? Seriously, no one should have that good of hygiene!

I immediately went to work (okay maybe Brad forced me) to pare down my massive collection. In doing so I’ve discovered that I’m apparently obsessive about hair removal. I had two hair removal lotion kits, a waxing kit, a bottle of Nair, two packs of blade cartridge refills for Schick and Gelette in addition to my actual razors, and three separate packs of disposable razors for traveling. And lets not forget the four tweezers. I’m not sure if I expect to be felt up (by Brad preferably) or have to jump into a bikini at a moments notice, but I suppose I’ll be ready and hairless should the occasion present itself.

I also found that I own more lipgloss and lipstick than any one girl should have. I counted 36 (!), but I keep one or two in each of my purses so who knows what the actual number is. Several lipsticks are the same color as though I was worried about being caught somewhere without that ‘certain’ shade and a few of them have ever even been opened! LAME. So I’ve chucked any hue that I didn’t absolutely love and donated the unopened tubes. Then I took my almost-gone-but-not-quite items and melted them down into one brand new color. (I’ve done this before and it’s fun to play around with the colors. Try it some time!)

All in all, I managed to toss out a full garbage bag of cosmetic stuff. So… now I have two bins rather than three.

Hey, it’s progress, people! Progress!
